A few years ago, I had a lot of fun watching Jenn Wexler’s feature directorial debut The Ranger (you can read my 8/10 review HERE), so I’m very glad to hear that she’s about to head into production on her second feature, the 1970s-set supernatural horror film The Sacrifice Game! Olivia Scott Welch of the Fear Street trilogy is on board to star in the film alongside Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Gus Kenworthy (American Horror Story: 1984), Chloë Levine (The OA), Derek Johns (The Wolf and the Lion), Laurent Pitre (Under the Banner of Heaven), Madison Baines (1UP), and newcomer Georgia Acken.
Wexler wrote the screenplay for The Sacrifice Game with Sean Redlitz, crafted a story that’s set at
a girls’ boarding school over Christmas break, 1971, where Samantha and Clara, two students staying behind for the holidays, must survive the night against uninvited visitors.
Wexler is producing the film with Heather Buckley and Todd Slater of Convoke Media, as well as Philip Kalin-Hajdu and Albert I. Melamed. Welch and Massoud serve as executive producers, as do Roman Kopelevich and Crystal Hill of Red Sea Media, Inc., Peter Phok, Mark Berry, and Duane Farley of AMG, Real by Fake, and Marc Côté. Yannick Sadler is co-producing.
The Sacrifice Game stars filming on May 9th. The Shudder streaming service has already picked up the distribution rights in all of their territories, while Red Sea Media, Inc. has acquired the international distribution rights.
Shudder’s Craig Engler had this to say:
We loved The Ranger and are thrilled to be working with Jenn and her team to bring her new film, The Sacrifice Game, to life. Jenn’s film promises to be a wild and thrilling ride that offers a fresh take on timeless horror themes. We can’t wait to share it with our members.”
Red Sea Media’s Roman Kopelevich said,
I loved this script – it reminded me of the classic horror films of the 70s.”
Wexler provided the following statement:
I am extremely excited to be working with this incredible cast and to be partnering again with Shudder and with RSM. The Sacrifice Game is my tribute to the beauty and boldness of ‘70s horror, anchored in an unlikely friendship between outsiders.”
And producers Kalin-Hajdu and Melamed said this:
After years working in genre, it is a highlight to be making a Shudder original with this film. Wexler’s thrilling vision pulled us in from the start. We have never seen Mena Massoud and Olivia Scott Welch in roles like these and we can’t wait to share it with the world. We are grateful to be working with Shudder and RSM.”
I’m already sold on The Sacrifice Game and hyped for it. Are you interested in this movie? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
