Filming AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, which consists of dozens of heroes coming together to fight a major galactic force, was probably far from a cake walk. The logistics of weaving together all the characters, tones and plots in a way that makes sense is enough to crush the mind of any mortal man. Directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are not mortal men, but at a recent Q&A with the fans (via GameSpot) the two talked about all the challenges they faced making the epic.
Anthony Russo talked about how this was “one of the most complicated movies ever made", and that everyone from the cast to the crew brought everything they had to deliver something audiences have been anticipating for 10 years.

Certainly, this is one of the most complicated movies ever made in many ways. I think all of us appreciate what a special and unique opportunity this was. No one has ever seen a film like this. No one has ever seen this number of loved characters in a single film with this caliber of cast. And that’s really what drove all of us.
I think everybody brought their best collaborative energy to the project. Everybody sacrificed hard for the project. It’s not only important to us, but it’s important to the audiences and everybody rose to the cause.
He continued, saying that one of the reasons why the process was so difficult involved juggling all the different tones and figuring out how characters, like Thor (Chris Hemsworth), interact with characters they’ve never met, like the Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s not every day a god of thunder teams up with a talking raccoon and his tree pal.
Being able to pull from characters that have such a wide variety of tones and films that have a wide variety of tones, and figuring out how they live in the same space together, [along with] what happens when you push them together–that's why this film was such an intense collaborative process.
It's why we had to rely so much upon the actors in terms of what their instincts were, what their sensibilities were, how would they behave when they met each other for the first time even though they were coming from places that were so different on a narrative and tonal level. It was a complex process but I think that when it's all mixed together it makes for a pretty wonderful thing.

Joe Russo then went on to say that he hopes fans leave feeling a “complex array of emotions” given the themes of the movie deal with “What it costs to be a hero in a complicated world.” Things do tend to get complicated when alien hordes are running across the plains and creepy alien dudes are shushing people.
Between WINTER SOLDIER and CIVIL WAR the Russos have handled both complex themes and massives casts before, and though I would hate to be the people in charge of juggling this whole epic, I'm glad these two stepped up. This film is ten years in the making, so I trust everyone knew what the game plan was going in and that everything we will see will make sense as one cohesive film. God, I hope I'm right.
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR arrives April 27.
