The Rise of Skywalker officially crosses $1 billion worldwide

Through all the controversy, fan fervor and general mass appeal, STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER has now crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, making it the 7th film to do so in 2019 for Disney and the 5th film to do so in the Star Wars franchise. Currently, the domestic totals for THE RISE OF SKYWALKER sits at $481.3 Million domestically ($1.001 Billion worldwide).

The previous entry, STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, topped out at $1.3 billion worldwide, while STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS topped out at $2 billion. It's certainly possible that RISE could match or possibly exceed THE LAST JEDI's overall take, but I'll bet good Republic Credits that it doesn't come close to THE FORCE AWAKENS' haul. It's likely that RISE will fall just behind THE LAST JEDI's final cume by early estimates, finishing out somewhere in the $1.1 billion frame, which isn't exactly drops in the bucket, but certainly not closing out a decades-long saga with the kind of "force" one might expect.

Disney's other members of the billion dollar club from 2019 include: AVENGERS: ENDGAME, THE LION KING, CAPTAIN MARVEL, TOY STORY 4, ALADDIN and FROZEN II. In addition, Sony's SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME and WB's JOKER also hit the Billion dollar mark in 2019, bringing the grand total to nine films for the year. An impressive feat for the House of Mouse, no doubt, and surely to be repeated to some extent in 2020, but not likely with as many entries as 2019. Either way, it'll be interesting to watch and see who makes a bid for the esteemed Billion Dollar Club in the year to come.

STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER is now playing in theaters everywhere.
