The upcoming STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER won't only serve as the finale to the Sequel Trilogy, but to the entire nine-film Skywalker saga as well. Obviously this won't be the end of the STAR WARS franchise as Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has previously said that they're busy planning out the next decade of the series, which will include a trilogy of films from STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI writer/director Rian Johnson and another trilogy from Game of Thrones show-runners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff.
Will STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER be the last we see of characters such as Rey (Daisy Ridley), Poe (Oscar Isaac), Finn (John Boyega), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), as well as others? It may not be as Kathleen Kennedy told MTV that we will see certain characters again.
There’s no question that there’s certain characters that we’ve created, certainly in the last three movies, that we may very well want to see down the line in the future.
This doesn't necessarily mean that we'll be seeing these characters pop up again on the big-screen, as Kennedy said that Disney+ will give them "huge opportunities" to tell "smaller [and[ grittier" stories. I guess we'll have to see where STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER leaves us before we start guessing which characters will have a future.
Kathleen Kennedy will soon be meeting with Rian Johnson, D.B. Weiss, and David Benioff to discuss the future of the STAR WARS Franchise. "We knew we were going to close this up, we knew that even before we started The Force Awakens. We are looking at the next saga. We are not just looking at another trilogy, we're really looking at the next 10 years or more," Kennedy said. "This [movie] is the culmination of the Skywalker Saga; it’s by no means the culmination of Star Wars. I’m sitting down now with Dan Weiss and David Benioff…and Rian Johnson. We’re all sitting down to talk about, where do we go next? We’ve all had conversations about what the possibilities might be, but now we’re locking it down."
STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER will hit theaters on December 20, 2019.
