The Ring franchise is reborn in trailers for Rings

Originally set to be released on November 13th, 2015, director F. Javier Gutierrez's RINGS has been shuffled around the schedule a couple times but now looks like it might be sticking with its current October 28th, 2016 release date. A promising sign is the fact that domestic and international trailers were released online this morning and can be viewed below.

A sequel to the 2002 film THE RING, which was a remake of the 1998 Japanese film RINGU, RINGS was written by Akiva Goldsman, David Loucka, and Jacob Aaron Estes, and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro.

The synopsis:

In Rings, a young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before…

Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe, Johnny Galecki, Aimee Teegarden, Bonnie Morgan, and Vincent D'Onofrio star.

While I'm a fan of RINGU and THE RING, the only other RING film I've seen is the 1999 South Korean remake THE RING VIRUS. I've never watched any of the sequels to these films, so I have no idea what I've missed over the years. That said, the trailers for RINGS do look promising, with a story that brings the concept into the modern age of internet videos and, for a sequence that looks huge and harrowing, personal entertainment screens on airplanes.

What do you think – should I stick with my streak of not watching RING sequels, or should I make an exception for RINGS?
