It's hard to believe that it was 13 years ago when director Gore Verbinski lent his atmospheric touch to Japanese horror and brought THE RING to cinemas. That film brought mystery and some serious scares to PG-13 horror, and a sub-par sequel killed the potential franchise just as fast. The latest we've heard about the third RING film was that it would be 3D and for those of you wondering how a VHS tape could do ANY damage in today's society, the answer is that it won't. The third film, now titled RINGS, will be a prequel detailing the origin of Samara, creepy ghost child and expert well climber.
I can't say I was one that really took to the lore of THE RING. The biggest takeaway for me was always the atmosphere of the film, which Gore Verbinski is an expert at crafting. Too bad that doesn't speak for the quality of his recent work, but I digress. At this point it's a little too early to get excited about a third RING film, and a prequel at that. Here's hoping that the addition of Akiva Goldsman (INSURGENT, A BEAUTIFUL MIND) to the writing team will yield some positive results.
RINGS is scheduled to hit theaters on November 13, 2015.
At least RINGS has one thing going for it in lead actress Matilda Lutz.
