Who knows what is going to happen with horror icon Michael Myers and the direction of the HALLOWEEN franchise next?
I can tell you it won’t be Dimension Films or The Weinstein Company, that’s for certain, as word is quickly spreading (via Bloody Disgusting) that they no longer have the rights to the series under their control.
They may have started with Michael Myers back in 1995 for HALLOWEEN: THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS, the sixth film in the franchise, but it’s all come to an end now, with Miramax and producer Malek Akkad starting from scratch once again. They’re leaving behind the stalled development of a 3D HALLOWEEN film that Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton had been working on and aiming to figure out what the next step will be, seeking a new distributor where they can park Myers for the forseeable future.
Bloody Disgusting goes on to speculate that perhaps… maybe… within the realm of possibility… a shared universe could come together that could bring all of the horror icons together using some connective tissue. Granted, that would take some finnagling and deal-making, but where there’s a will and money to be made, there is always a way. Could we see Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Jason Voorhies and others in the horror equivalent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? I wouldn’t put that past New Line from trying to make that happen, especially with one of the biggest chips now up for grabs – something that doesn’t happen everyday.
