Way back in 2012, we brought you word that J.J. Abrams, Edgar Wright and screenwriter Mark Protosevich (Spike Lee's OLDBOY, I AM LEGEND) were joining forces with Paramount for a sci-fi film titled COLLIDER, with Abrams producing through his Bad Robot shingle, and Wright directing from a script by Protosevich. There hasn't been any movement on the project since then, but now Deadline is reporting that Mark L. Smith has been hired by the studio to write a new draft.
Smith co-wrote THE REVENANT with director Alejandro Iñárritu, is working on the GHOST RECON script for Warner Bros, and penned Leonardo DiCaprio's Viking flick NORSE. Smith's other writing credits include VACANCY and its sequel, and Joe Dante's THE HOLE.
There's still no details on the plot for the secretive project or when filming might start. Wright is currently doing pre-production work for BABY DRIVER starring Ansel Elgort and Lily James, and could move on to COLLIDER, an adaptation of the Andrew Smith YA novel Grasshopper Jungle or a remake of THE NIGHT STALKER once he's done with his "collision of crime, action, music, and sound."
BABY DRIVER is set to open on March 17, 2017, while THE REVENANT will be in theaters on December 25, 2015.
