The real reason Paramount sold The Cloverfield Paradox to Netflix

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Last month, the newest entry in the CLOVERFIELD series made its surprise debut on Netflix following the Super Bowl. While that promotional stunt was a badass, the movie itself was mostly a bore. So is that why Paramount choose to sell the film to Netflix? Yes and no…

Recently, Paramount COO Andrew Gumpert was a keynote speaker at the UCLA Law School’s annual Entertainment Symposium and dropped some new info on just why Paramount gave THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX the boot.

Paramount COO Andrew Gumpert:

The movie was finished, we all reviewed it together with J.J. and his team. We all decided there were things about it that made us have a pause about its commercial playability in the traditional matter.

He continues:

There was an ability for us to be fiscally prudent and monetize. For fans of Cloverfield, the fact is many, many more millions of people saw the movie. It's a positive on every level.

As we all imagined, what he basically is saying is that the studio was worried the film would bomb (which it more than likely would have) and Netflix just didn't seem to care. Which is all well and good. At least we got to see the film for ourselves, unlike FOX and their THE NEW MUTANTS kerfuffle.

Synopsis:

The story, set in the near future, centers on a team of astronauts on a space station making a terrifying discovery that challenges all they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for their survival.

The film is directed by Julius Onah from a screenplay by Oren Uziel and Doug Jung. The film stars David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Brühl, and Chris O’Dowd. THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX is now streaming on Netflix.
