The Purge: Franchise creator says The Forever Purge may not be the last film

Despite it being heavily stated that The Forever Purge would be the last film of the profitable Purge franchise, the overlord of all things The Purge, James DeMonaco, says that he has an idea for another sequel.

During an interview with "Entertainment Weekly", the interviewer said, "I feel like you're becoming the Frank Sinatra of The Purge movies. You're always announcing your retirement from them."  This then led the interviewer to ask if this really was going to be his last Purge film and here is what DeMonaco had to say:

"I thought it was. Even with [director] Everardo Gout, it was like this is it, my end of America, America is burning. So that was the initial intent. I'm going to be completely honest, I came up with something about two months ago. I woke up with a new way that we can keep it fresh and turn the thing upside down. So if the people want it, the idea's in the works, I've outlined it, so it could happen."

If James DeMonaco has a good idea, I don't see why they can't keep these films going. Unlike most horror film franchises, the films do touch on subject matter that's very topical which also makes the idea behind them a bit more frightening because they're grounded in a bit of reality. I saw The Forever Purge last night and while the violence and action are what might lure most people in, I found the film to be creepily topical which is why the film worked for me on a realistic and visceral level. Then there is the issue of pure profit. The Purge films are pretty cheap to make and they bring in a lot of money. As of this writing, the franchise has grossed over $450 million worldwide on a combined production budget of $35 million. As for the next film, the interviewer points out that Jason Blum says he wouldn't make a Purge movie without DeMonaco, and here is what he had to say about that:

"Yeah, he says that to me. He really wants me to direct the next one. It's such a crazy idea I was actually like, oh, maybe I'll do that one. I'll definitely write it, I'll say that. So I'll definitely be involved in some way. I do worry, in different hands, you just don't want to see it go the wrong way, because it easily could, with a concept like this."

In The Forever Purge, which was announced as the fifth and final film of the franchise, all the rules are broken as a sect of lawless marauders decides that the annual Purge does not stop at daybreak and instead should never end. The film stars Ana de la Reguera, Tenoch Huerta, Josh Lucas, Cassidy Freeman, Leven Rambin, Alejandro Edda, and Will Patton.
