I’m impressed that Blumhouse was able to turn The Purge (WATCH IT HERE – OWN IT HERE), a quaint three million dollar home invasion thriller, into an epic and successful franchise. One that has spanned four movies (with a fifth on the way) and a two-season stint on television. With the release of its newest entry, The Forever Purge hitting theaters today, we decided to defend one of the series most underrated entries, the original 2013 flick that started it all, The Purge.
Now, most of the criticism at the time was aimed at the unique and vast world created in The Purge, being used as a set dressing for a standard home invasion movie. Even we can agree that the idea of a legal purge is ripe with creative ideas worth exploring; thankfully, the sequels expanded on this in great detail. But as the first entry stands, it’s still a solid exploration in horror, surrounded by a great cast that elevates the material. So join us as we show some love for the small-scale flick that started it all and dig into the Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey starring horror entry, The Purge!
Directed by James DeMonaco and starring Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Rhys Wakefield, Edwin Hodge, Chris Mulkey, The Purge has the following synopsis:
A wealthy family is held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legal.
