With the Academy Awards fast approaching on March 27, 2022, several award shows that come before have begun handing out their prizes and it could be a strong indication of where the Oscars are headed. In the case of The Power of The Dog, it could mean that the film is destined to take home Best Picture honors on Hollywood’s biggest night.
The Power of The Dog was named Best Film at the BAFTA and Critics Choice Awards, per Deadline. The wins helped cement the Western as a front-runner in the Oscar race for Best Picture. Director Jane Campion also took home Best Director honors at both ceremonies for helming the film. Adding these wins with her DGA Award win on Saturday, Campion is suddenly the front runner in that particular category as well.
Dune was the biggest winner at the BAFTA Awards although all of its wins were in technical categories. While Dune lost out for Best Film to The Power of The Dog, the film dominated in the crafts categories with five wins that included Production Design, Special Visual Effects, Cinematography, Sound, and Original Score.
The BAFTA Awards also matched with the Critics Choice Awards in their choice for Best Actor. Will Smith took home the award at both ceremonies for King Richard, cementing his place as the front runner for the Oscar in his category. The ceremonies did not match in the Best Actress category, however. Joanna Scanlan took home Leading Actress at the BAFTA Awards for After Love while Jessica Chastain was named Best Actress at the Critics Choice Awards for The Eyes of Tammy Faye. That category is still tough to call for the Academy Awards. Chastain is certainly gaining momentum after this win and her SAG Award triumph but I still think the award is up for grabs when comes to the Oscars.
The ceremonies matched again in the Supporting Actor and Actress category. Troy Kotsur took home the trophy for CODA while Ariana DeBose also continued to be the frontrunner in her category for her portrayal of Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. CODA also scored a big win at the BAFTA Awards for Siân Heder’s Adapted Screenplay of the critically acclaimed film. Best Adapted Screenplay went to Jane Campion for The Power of The Dog at the Critics Choice Awards while Original Screenplay went to Paul Thomas Anderson and Licorice Pizza at the BAFTA Awards.
The Critics Choice Awards, which boasts our very own Chris Bumbray as a voter for the event, handed out Best Original Screenplay and Acting Ensemble to Belfast while Jude Hill also won for Young Actor/Actress. Jamie Dornan was on hand to accept the cast prize and during his speech, he said, “As someone from Belfast, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of telling a story about a place people don’t have a really big idea about it. … without a politicized or military lens, seeing it through the eyes of family — something we can all relate to in Ukraine, families going through this hardship.”
Television is also honored at the Critics Choice Awards Ted Lasso led the pack with four wins while HBO’s Succession took home three. Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso took home Best Comedy Series and Jason Sudekis won for Best Actor. The show’s Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein snatched up respective TV awards for Supporting Actress and Actor for the show. Jean Smart won Best Actress in a Comedy for HBO Max’s Hacks which didn’t make it a clean sweep for Ted Lasso. Succession won in the Best Drama Series category and also took home awards in the Supporting Actress and Actor categories for Sarah Snook and Kieran Culkin. Succession lost out in the Lead Actor and Actress category with surprise wins from Lee Jung-Jae for Netflix’s Squid Game and Melanie Linsky for Showtime’s Yellowjackets.
In the Limited Series category, HBO’s Mare of Easttown won the top prize while Kate Winslet also took home Best Actress in a Limited Series for the show. Michael Keaton won for Best Actor in a Limited Series for Hulu’s Dopesick. The White Lotus’ Murray Bartlett and Jennifer Coolidge won the night’s first two awards for Supporting Actor and Actress in a Limited Series.
What are YOUR thoughts on the outcome of last night’s ceremonies? You can check out the full winners list for both shows beginning with the BAFTA Awards!
