After a successful first season, Prime Video announced today that they have renewed The Peripheral for season 2. The sci-fi drama is based on William Gibson’s 2014 book of the same name and stars Chloe Grace Moretz as Flynne Fisher, a young woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. Flynne is smart, ambitious, and doomed. She has no future; until the future comes calling for her.
“We are thrilled to continue the journey into Season Two and delve deeper into the incredible world that Gibson created,” said executive producers Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, Kilter Films, in a statement. “On behalf of Scott Smith, Vincenzo Natali, and the entire team, we’re grateful to our partners at Amazon and, most of all, to the fans.” Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios, added, “William’s mind-bending story in partnership with the brilliant minds of Scott and Jonathan and Lisa, produced an unforgettable journey for our global audience and we are thrilled with how they embraced the series. We look forward to extending our partnership with Warner Bros. and Kilter Films as this uniquely ambitious series continues to unfold.“
In addition to Chloe Grace Moretz, The Peripheral also stars Jack Reynor, Gary Carr, JJ Field, T’Nia Miller, and more. The first season launched on Prime Video last October and wrapped up its eight-episode run in December. The first season received largely positive reviews, including one from our own Alex Maidy.
“The Peripheral is a great companion series to Westworld as both stories explore the dangers of technology and how it affects the masses, but this series is far more approachable,” wrote Maidy in his review of the series. “By setting this series in two very different timelines that are connected not only by distance but also by almost a century, Scott B. Smith has managed to take William Gibson’s epic novel and turned it into an equally epic long-form series. Each hour-long episode feels packed with story and flies by thanks to the solid editing, musical score, and scope of the directors. The Peripheral is the best science fiction series I have seen the premiere of Westworld. This story has the potential to be the legitimate successor to Ozark and Breaking Bad told in a genre that I never expected to work with that type of story.” You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review right here.
