The Walking Dead wrapped up its eleven season run on AMC last year, but two actors who didn’t stick with the show for that entire time were Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira, who played the characters of Rick and Michonne. Rick was flown out of the show in the midst of season 9, taken away by members of an organization known as CRM, or the Civic Republic Military. The other characters on the show spent six years believing Rick was dead… until his wife Michonne found evidence that he was still out there, a captive of the CRM. So toward the end of season 10, she set out on a search for her husband. Rick and Michonne are the main characters in the upcoming spin-off series The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (formerly known as The Walking Dead: Rick & Michonne), and newly released set pics reveal Michonne on set, wearing a new outfit: a CRM jacket! These images can be seen in the embed at the bottom of this article.
A premiere date for this mini-series hasn’t been announced, but it’s expected to reach AMC and AMC+ sometime in 2024.
Gurira co-created the mini-series and is also one of the writers on the show. Consisting of six episodes, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will present an “epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?“
Gurira is working on the mini-series with Scott M. Gimple, Chief Content Officer of the Walking Dead Universe. Self spoke with Gimple about their collaboration, and he told them, “She challenges me, I challenge her, and neither one of us lets the other off the hook. In life, I’m more a character actor; Danai is a lead. When we’re working, when we’re pitching, when we’re just dealing with life stuff—it’s a good combo.” Describing Gurira as “incredibly creatively ambitious,” Gimple added, “[Danai] wants to do new, signature work—stuff that isn’t out there currently. She doesn’t want to settle in any way. It’s the best creative energy to be around.”
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live was filmed in New Jersey. Lincoln and Gurira are joined in the cast by fellow The Walking Dead cast member Pollyanna McIntosh and Lesley-Ann Brandt (Lucifer), who plays a character named Pearl Thorne.
