The Nun scores best Conjuring Universe opening weekend with $50+ million

A few weeks back we shared the word that box-office analysis was predicting that director Corin Hardy’s THE NUN starring Demian Bichir and Taissa Farmiga may snag as much as $40 million on opening weekend. Well, the film’s opening weekend has come and gone, and today we can report that the newest film in THE CONJURING UNIVERSE blew even those expectations out of the water.

Yes, Box Office Mojo reports that THE NUN scored a stellar $53.5 million at the weekend box-office making it the most successful opening weekend in THE CONJURING UNIVERSE! Yes, this new film even bested the franchise’s top earner THE CONJURING’s $41.8 million.

The spinoff is set in Romania in 1951 and begins when

A young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate.  Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret.  Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in “The Conjuring 2,” as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.

This weekend in September seems to be a prime slot for R-rated horror movies as just last year; the slot was filled by STEPHEN KING’S IT which snagged a massive $123 million in its first three days. Expect a similarly colossal opening when the sequel IT: CHAPTER TWO opens on this same weekend next year.

Did you check out THE NUN this past weekend? What did you think? Let us know below! The movie is now playing in theaters nationwide and is rated R for “terror, violence, and disturbing/bloody images.”
