The Northman, a Viking revenge film from The Witch (watch it HERE) and The Lighthouse (watch that one HERE) director Robert Eggers, has earned just under $52 million at the global box office since reaching theatres on April 22nd. Now it’s time for The Northman to head home, as it has been announced on the film’s official Twitter account that its VOD release date is this Friday, May 13th.
Our own Chris Bumbray has seen The Northman and gave it a perfect 10/10 review, which you can read at THIS LINK. He described the film as an “absolute masterpiece” and “probably the best historical epic since Kingdom of Heaven. A truly unique journey into madness and revenge Viking-style! A must-see in theaters — the sound and visual demand it.”
Scripted by Eggers and Icelandic poetic / novelist Sjón, The Northman has been described as
“a Viking revenge saga set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century” that will show “how far a Viking prince will go to seek justice for his murdered father.”
The film reunites Eggers with his The Witch stars Ralph Ineson and Anya Taylor-Joy. Also in the cast are Alexander Skarsgård (The Stand), Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos), Björk (Dancer in the Dark), Ethan Hawke (Sinister), Claes Bang (The Girl in the Spider’s Web), Olwen Fouéré (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and Willem Dafoe, who Eggers previously worked with on The Lighthouse.
The story was inspired by the Scandinavian legends that William Shakespeare’s Hamlet was based on. Skarsgård is playing Amleth, who was the direct inspiration for the character Prince Hamlet.
The Northman was produced by Lars Knudsen, with New Regency providing the financing.
I haven’t seen the movie yet, since I haven’t been to a theatre since before the pandemic hit. I’m glad to hear that it’s going to be available on VOD so soon. I’ll definitely be checking it out soon after its available. Will you be watching The Northman on VOD? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
