The Northman: video game inspired by Robert Eggers’ Viking revenge film now available through Fortnite

The Witch (watch it HERE) and The Lighthouse (watch that one HERE) director Robert Eggers’ latest film The Northman, a Viking revenge tale, is set to reach theatres on April 22nd… but if you want to immerse yourself in the world of the film earlier than that, The Hollywood Reporter has some good news for you: The Northman distributor Focus Features has teamed up with gaming firm Loaded to release a custom, playable role-playing game that can accessed through the popular video game Fortnite. To access the game Vengeance: Inspired by The Northman, which includes over twenty hours of content, you’ll need to enter the island code 6089-1011-3272 into Fortnite.

Loaded’s Ashley Hsieh had this to say about the project:

When we get an opportunity to partner with a group who is willing to really think about things from a new perspective, it allows us to approach the market from a new direction. These are the types of engagements that change the paradigm, and we’re so proud to have been able to design this experience on behalf of the great team over at Focus.”

Scripted by Eggers and Icelandic poetic / novelist Sjón, The Northman has only been described as

“a Viking revenge saga set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century” that will show “how far a Viking prince will go to seek justice for his murdered father.”

The film reunites Eggers with his The Witch stars Ralph Ineson and Anya Taylor-Joy. Also in the cast are Alexander Skarsgård (The Stand), Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos), Björk (Dancer in the Dark), Ethan Hawke (Sinister), Claes Bang (The Girl in the Spider’s Web), Olwen Fouéré (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and Willem Dafoe, who Eggers previously worked with on The Lighthouse.

We do know that the story was inspired by the Scandinavian legends that William Shakespeare’s Hamlet was based on. Skarsgård is playing Amleth, who was the direct inspiration for the character Prince Hamlet.
