THE NICE GUYS, Shane Black's comedic crime drama about a mismatched pair of private eyes who investigate a missing girl and the mysterious death of a porn star will receive the "gender-swap and reboot" treatment courtesy of a script commitment with penalty at Fox. THE NICE GIRLS project comes by way of Silver Pictures through the studio's first-look deal at Lionsgate and will be a co-production between Lionsgate TV, 20th TV and Silver Pictures TV. The new show will feature a pair of lady PIs sleuthing it up in modern times.
The original film, directed and written by Shane Black with Anthony Bagarozzi, starred Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe as something of an "Odd Couple" of investigators who reluctantly team-up to solve a crime that's set against a 1977 Los Angeles backdrop. At the time of its release, the film had received high praise from critics and managed to earn a total of $60 million at the box office.
Personally, I've no horse in this race. Without the 1970s setting, isn't this just like any other contemporary cop show on television? Don't get me wrong, kudos to Fox for giving the thumbs up to a script featuring two female leads in law enforcement roles, I just hope they've got some surprises planned for what sounds to me like a rather unremarkable idea.
