The New Mutants Comic Con @ Home Panel – release date and first scene!

One of the biggest events of the day turned out to be something of a non-starter when Marvel’s THE NEW MUTANTS panel dropped, without announcing any new dates. In fact, the panel started off with a teaser crossing off the various release dates, with a barrage of angry tweets complaining about the fact that the film seems on the verge of never coming out. However, they seem to be holding firm on the August 28th release date, although all involved said: “fingers crossed.”

Otherwise, the whole cast was there in their homes, looking significantly older than they do in the trailer – it has to be said. How many years has it been since this thing was shot? Keeping the light vibe going, everyone got a look at their characters in emoji form. There was also a poster giveaway going on and some fan art, all of which you can check out if you watch the panel below.

Fun factoid, THE NEW MUTANTS’ original comic artist Bill Sienkiewicz stopped by, and said that two days after the lockdown happened, he and director Josh Boone were set to record a Blu-ray commentary. For his part, Boone said he was a huge fan of NEW MUTANTS for years, and dreamed of making this movie. He seems very happy with the finished product despite no one having seen it yet.

Overall, this was a pretty standard panel, although the cast seems genuinely excited about the prospect of the film finally coming out. It’s been a long journey. They also talked about the importance of Blu Hunt's Mirage and Maisie Williams’ Wolfsbane being an LGTB couple that falls in love over the course of the film, with Boone saying their chemistry was apparent right from the get-go, so much so that Hunt's screen test opposite Williams will be on the Blu-ray. They also showed the film’s opening scene, which was a really intense bit showing Mirage’s father get murdered in front of her in the midst of chaos, with her waking up in the asylum this is set in right after. Pretty intense and well done, but definitely check it out yourself in the panel above. There was also a trailer, with the film’s official rating, for the record, still being PG-13. 

Which leaves us with the opening date. Confusingly, there was a competition for fans to attend an advance screening of the film, but where exactly will the screenings be? And when? So while the release date is still August 28th, we’ll just have to wait and see.
