Just when you thought the release window for director Josh Boone's THE NEW MUTANTS couldn't get anymore cracked and fogged, along comes a new interview via DigitalSpy with producer Simon Kinberg that casts an even darker light on the long-gestating X-Men spin-off.
According to Kinberg, the project has again come into some issues on account of not being able to wrangle the primary cast for proper re-shoots and pick-ups.
"What's happening is we're gonna do reshoots this year on that film and it has a new release date from Disney. That's really it.," Kinberg told DigitalSpy. "Part of it was figuring out what the re-shoots were gonna be, the pick-ups, and the other part of it was getting that cast back together."
To be fair, this unfortunate situation is rather understandable, as several of the film's star players have moved on to other projects, including Maisie Williams' filming of director Julie Berg's THE OWNERS, Anya Taylor-Joy's participation in several projects such as THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE, LAST NIGHT IN SOHO, and director Justin Kelly's WEETZIE BAT, just to name a few. There's also Blu Hunt, who's poised to star as Nina Blackbird alongside Cobie Smulders in the television adaptation of Greg Rucka's STUMPTOWN. In other words, these young actors are all over the map, and getting them to assemble for more work on THE NEW MUTANTS has been something of a fool's errand as of late.
"For all of these movies, Marvel's really brilliant at scheduling pick-ups into their budget and schedule so it's all prepared, and we have never been that smart. For us, we're always scrambling to get these actors back together so they're all in the same place at the same time," Kinberg lamented while commenting on the project's fourth bout with a bonafide release date. "It would seem simple on The New Mutants because they maybe not as big movie stars as the main X-Men movies, but all of them are on TV shows, so we've got to wait until they get off their shows and they can all be in the same place at the same time. So that will be some time this year, we'll do our pick-ups and the movie will come out," Kinberg said.
Woof. For THE NEW MUTANTS sake, I sure hoping that this movie packs a punch, once all is said and done. Because honestly, with every delay comes a new cast of doubt that the project will come together as a cohesive adventure for some of Marvel's lesser-known mutants. I mean, morbid curiosity will certainly get some people to watch, but as someone who genuinely loves several of the film's characters, I'm banking on a miracle at this point.
