You've got to feel for THE NEW MUTANTS. When production on the X-MEN spin-off began back in 2017, the franchise was still riding high off the success of DEADPOOL and LOGAN, but in just a few short years, DARK PHOENIX would bring the series to its knees as Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in a massive merger. Not only that, but the release date of THE NEW MUTANTS has continuously been shuffled around. If you recall, the film was originally supposed to have been released in theaters over two years ago! THE NEW MUTANTS don't get no respect.
Well, things were finally looking up for THE NEW MUTANTS following Disney's acquisition, but then the whole COVID-19 pandemic reared its ugly head, and the film was shuffled off to an August release date, which, in my opinion, seems unlikely at this point, but hey, I'd love to be wrong. Thankfully, it's not all bad news as it was announced today that writer/director Josh Boone and the cast of THE NEW MUTANTS, including Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga, will be taking part in a special ComicCon@Home panel on July 23rd! Check out a promo trailer below!
You'll notice that the above promo video doesn't include the previously announced August 28, 2020 release date, which could mean that they're playing it safe and will push the release of THE NEW MUTANTS back yet again, or, perhaps they'll finally just say screw it and release the film on Disney+ (or Hulu).
The official synopsis for THE NEW MUTANTS:
20th Century Studios in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.
Come on, THE NEW MUTANTS. You've got this.
