We already knew the shortlist for possible actors in the running to play Harry Osborn in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and now we know who the lucky guy is. From the group of actors featuring many new faces, CHRONICLE star Dane DeHaan as landed the role.

Previously portrayed by James Franco in all three of the Sam Raimi films, Harry Osborn will be integral to the rebooted Spider-man universe. Seeing as Oscorp was central to Peter Parker’s investigation of his father’s past in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, it seemed natural that Harry would appear in the sequel. Harry starts as Peter’s friend in the comics and prior films before their relationship begins to unravel as both men explore their hidden identities.

According to director Marc Webb, “Dane is an exciting and extraordinary young actor and he is a fantastic addition to our cast”.

DeHaan was fantastic in CHRONICLE which also explored what can happen if superpowers drive you to the dark side. If you haven’t seen CHRONICLE yet, I implore you to check it out. DeHaan embodies a slighter frame than Franco but does seem to be more physically on par with Andrew Garfield. I think this is a great choice that keeps the Marc Webb series firmly in the high school years.

DeHaan has had some big roles in the last few years including LAWLESS, LINCOLN, and the upcoming PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, DEVIL’S KNOT, and KILL YOUR DARLINGS. I remember seeing him in the HBO series IN TREATMENT where he played a pathological teenager. Talk about acting chops.

He will join Garfield, Emma Stone, Shailene Woodley, and potentially Jamie Foxx when THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN begins production next year. The movie is slated for release on May 2, 2014.
