The new Halloween came very close to re-filming the original film’s climax

After the positive reaction which HALLOWEEN received upon its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, it seems that the film is due to make many horror fans quite pleased next month. David Gordon Green and Danny McBride elected to ignore the many HALLOWEEN sequels as the film will serve as a direct sequel to John Carpenter's original, but Green told Bloody Disgusting that the film almost began with a re-creation of the original's climax, cementing its connection to the original even more.

"Even in the script going into production, we were going to refilm the end of the original film from a different perspective," Green said. "We had this very complicated overhead view of Loomis shooting the gun, Michael going over and then the apprehension, assuming everybody was going to need a little bit to get back up to speed with where we are and we haven’t seen the movie in a long time or we’ve never seen the movie, had to invite everyone to the party and that kind of thing. We kept pushing it off." The production got so far as to hire body doubles for Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence), and there was even talk of using CGI to help bring the scene to life.

There was that conversation. There was conversation of utilizing footage from the original film and digitally altering it so we got some other interesting elements. All this stuff starts to cost money and when you look at what we’re trying to do, do you need the gimmick? Do you need the exposition? Do you need the setup?

At the end of the day, it was John Carpenter himself who convinced David Gordon Green that the sequence wasn't needed. "This was Carpenter actually calming me down on set," Green said. "I’m like, ‘Nobody’s going to know what’s happening and where we’re coming from.’ He’s like, ‘Just trust ‘em and leave ‘em alone and let ‘em figure it out.'" As they had already rebuilt the bedroom from the climax of the original film at this point, the production decided to save some money by transforming the set into Laurie's bedroom, so keep an eye out for a few similarities.
