Fans of The Muppet Show woke up to news worth celebrating this morning. It has been announced that all five seasons of the classic series are headed to Disney+.
The show will begin streaming on February 19, 2021, and in addition to the first three seasons, Disney+ will also house seasons four and five, which have never been previously released on home entertainment. Disney+ has been gearing up for the arrival of The Muppet Show since its launch which is already the home of all of the movies featuring the characters and the new hit series, Muppets Now.
Premiering in 1976, The Muppet Show was created by Jim Henson and featured the characters we would grow to love like Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, the Swedish Chef, and many more. The show was a twist on the classic variety show format and it blended original songs, sketch comedy, and famous guest stars. Some popular names to appear on The Muppet Show include Elton John, Liza Minelli, Steve Martin, Alice Cooper, Bernadette Peters, Diana Ross, Julie Andrews, Gladys Knight, and Gene Kelly. Head of The Muppet Show, Kermit the Frog himself, had this to say about the arrival of the show to the Disney+ platform:
"It’s going to be great to welcome back longtime fans, and to give a new generation of fans a chance to see how we got our start, how Miss Piggy became a star and so much more. Today, I’m proud to say: ‘It’s time to play the music, light the lights and meet the Muppets on Disney Plus tonight!’ And as for Statler and Waldorf, the two old guys in the balcony, I can only add: ‘Sorry, guys, but….here we go again.”
