Over the decades since the Universal Monsters made their debut on the silver screen, each Monster has received its own share of remakes and reimaginings. The Mummy franchise has been particularly prolific. The original 1932 movie spawned a handful of sequels, a Hammer Horror franchise, the Brendan Fraser trilogy (which in turn spawned a series of Scorpion King prequels), and a reboot starring Tom Cruise. No matter how you slice it, The Mummy continues to shuffle forward, but could the next remake come from Luca Guadagnino?
Luca Guadagnino recently spoke with Collider about his upcoming movie Bones and All and was asked what classic horror movie he’d most like to remake. “That’s an incredible question that I didn’t prepare myself [for],” Guadagnino said. “Oh my god, what should I do? I think it would be amazing to do something about The Mummy.” As for what draws him to The Mummy, Luca Guadagnino explained, “It’s a rotten body in rotten bandages, so what’s inside is [as] interesting as what’s outside.” While the last handful of remakes have given The Mummy an action-adventure makeover, Guadagnino wants to return the movie to its horror roots. “It should be very scary and very, very terminal.” He said. “It should be a little movie but with a lot of depth and very scary.” As much as I love the Brendan Fraser movies, I’d be more than happy to see a truly scary remake of The Mummy. Of course, Luca Guadagnino is no stranger to putting his spin on classic horror movies as he previously directed a reimagining of Dario Argento’s Suspiria.
Luca Guadagnino’s next movie is Bones and All, which tells the story “of first love between Maren, a young woman learning how to survive on the margins of society, and Lee, an intense and disenfranchised drifter; a liberating road odyssey of two young people coming into their own, searching for identity and chasing beauty in a perilous world that cannot abide who they are.” The film stars Taylor Russell and Timothée Chalamet and will open wide on November 23rd.
