The Mummy featurette focuses on the Zero G stunt sequence

One of my most highly anticipated films of the year is THE MUMMY, the first entry in the new Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe, which will see classic monsters and madmen like The Mummy, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein's Monster, The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man, and more crossing paths with each other over the course of multiple movies. Just like several of them did back when Universal was making their original series of monster movies. In anticipation of the creation of the new universe, I've been revisiting all of the old Universal monster movies, having fun watching the previous crossovers while looking forward to the future crossovers.

Also in anticipation of THE MUMMY I watched the featurette that can be seen below, which gives a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the upcoming film's Zero G stunt sequence, which also got a lot of attention in the trailer. Like MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL was sold on the image of star Tom Cruise climbing on the side of the Burj Khalifa building and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION was sold on the image of Cruise hanging on to the outside of a plane, this one seems to be getting sold on the image of Cruise getting knocked around in zero gravity.

It sounds like this idea came from Cruise as well. During the featurette he says that he had been wanting to do a Zero G sequence for years, and director Alex Kurtzman chimes in that he didn't think it could be done for real. But do it for real they did, filming the sequence on board a plane 25,000 feet off the ground. That's Cruise for you. The man's dedicated to doing spectacular stunts, and I love it.

Cruise's co-stars include Annabelle Wallis (who is also seen floating around in the featurette), Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, Marwan Kenzari, and Javier Botet, with Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll and Sofia Boutella as The Mummy.

THE MUMMY is scheduled to reach theatres on June 9, 2017.
