The Mother: Jennifer Lopez will fight to protect her daughter from those seeking vengeance

Mother’s Day is on the horizon, and it’s natural to celebrate those who give their all to their families. Mothers like Sarah Connor, Ripley, and Charlie Baltimore carry on the tradition of action heroines that are lionesses protecting their cubs from the threats of predators. Jennifer Lopez seeks to join the badass mothers with her new action thriller, The Mother. Netflix has just dropped the trailer showcasing Lopez’s new physical prowess to take down all comers threatening to hurt her daughter to get to her.

The official synopsis from Netflix reads,
A deadly female assassin comes out of hiding to protect the daughter that she gave up years before, while on the run from dangerous men.

The cast includes Lopez as the titular Mother. Lucy Paez, from films Silencio andThe Exorcism of Carmen Farias, plays Zoe, the Mother’s 12-year-old daughter. Omari Hardwick, known for Kick-Ass, Army of the Dead, Power, and Sorry to Bother You, plays FBI agent William Cruise. Gael García Bernal, known from movies such as Y Tu Mamá También, The Motorcycle Diaries, Bad Education, Mozart in the Jungle, Amores Perros, Coco, and Station Eleven, plays Arms dealer Hector Álvarez. Joseph Fiennes, who you may remember from Shakespeare in Love, Elizabeth, and The Handmaid’s Tale, is portraying British arms dealer Adrian Lovell and the Mother’s military mentor. And Paul Raci, who you’ve seen in projects such as Baskets, Goliath, Parks and Recreation, and Sound of Metal, playing Jons, the Mother’s former comrade in arms who helps her start over in Alaska.

Paez and Lopez truly bonded behind the scenes of the film. “She was very protective of me and I felt like I could talk to her about anything. She would talk to me in a mentor-best friend-motherly way,” Paez had recently told Tudum. Lopez is no stranger to playing a mother trained to protect her family, as she’s also portrayed a domestic abuse victim who had changed her life and identity in order to defend herself from her former husband in the 2002 film, Enough.

The script is penned by Misha Green and Andrea Berloff and Peter Craig, from a story by Misha Green. Producers of the movie include Jennifer Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, Marc Evans, and Misha Green, with Molly Allen on board as an executive producer. The movie is helmed by director Niki Caro.

The Mother will be available to stream on Netflix on Friday, May 12.
