The Monterey Five begin to crack in trailer for Big Little Lies season two

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

The latest trailer for the second season of HBO's Big Little Lies boasts some serious talent: Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz, and Meryl Streep herself. Consider me impressed.

The second season will begin with many characters still processing the death Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgård), and will further explore "the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode … the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom." Jane (Woodley) is attempting to build a new life for herself and Ziggy (Iain Armitage), with Renata (Dern) finding herself faced with new challenges in her marriage and Bonnie (Kravitz) struggling with Perry's death and forced to face the demons of her past. Meryl Streep will be playing Perry's mother, Mary Lousie Wright, who comes to Monterey searching for answers and feeling concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following the death of her son. Considering how difficult it was to get everyone back for a second season, it's unlikely there will be a third, but Nicole Kidman has stoked the rumour-mill by saying that although "it would be hard to get the whole group together" for another outing, "we would love to do it."

The second season of Big Little Lies will debut on June 9, 2019.
