We've got more pre-historic sharks in our future and it would seem that Ben Wheatley is the man to give them to us. THR has reported that Wheatley, whose adaptation of REBECCA debuted on Netflix just days ago, has signed on to direct a sequel to THE MEG, the 2018 giant shark movie that was directed by Jon Turteltaub (NATIONAL TREASURE).

Many of the key talents involved with the first film are expected to return for THE MEG 2, including Jason Statham, who is said to be creatively involved this time around. An initial draft of the sequel was written by Dean Georgaris, with Jon and Erich Hoeber now in the process of crafting the screenplay. The three writers also wrote the script for the first film. THE MEG starred Jason Statham as Jonas Taylor, an expert deep-sea rescue diver who is recruited to save the crew of a submersible that has been attacked by a Megalodon, a massive pre-historic creature thought to have been extinct. Although THE MEG received mixed reviews upon release, it was a box-office success, grossing over $530 million worldwide, and talk of a sequel quickly emerged. Personally, although I definitely had fun with the film, I found it a little mediocre when all was said and done. Hopefully the sequel is able to improve on what the first film set up. What are you hoping to see from a sequel to THE MEG?

Ben Wheatley's adaptation of REBECCA is now streaming on Netflix, so be sure to check out a review from our own JimmyO.
