The Matrix Resurrections finally hit movie theatres around the world last night (and HBO Max in the States), and fans of the franchise are proving to be divisive over how it fares as a sequel. To be sure, Lana Wachowski’s movie was always bound to be controversial. For one thing, Lily Wachowski’s sitting this one out, as is Yuen Woo-Ping’s action team, composer Don Davis, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving and a few others.
However, to give Lana credit, the storyline itself is wholly original, making this a genuinely unique sequel in many ways. At the same time, most agree that the new additions to the cast, specifically Jessica Henwick, are exceptional. And of course, two of the most important members of The Matrix family, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, are back and haven’t lost a beat. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a mixed 67% score, which is the same as the audience score, which is a little troubling if this movie is going to have legs at the box office.
However, our man JimmyO enjoyed it, giving it a solid 8/10. I was more mixed; my score would be about a 6/10.
Now, of course, is your time to weigh in. Let us know in the talkbacks below what you think. Does Lana Wachowski’s sequel improve upon The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions? Is it worse? Let us know your thoughts!
