In 1999 directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski released into the world THE MATRIX, the mend-bending, bullet-slowing sci-fi action flick that set the world on fire and became an eternal classic. Now, twenty years later, anyone who wasn’t able to check out the movie in theaters can now remedy the situation as the iconic flick starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss is heading back into theaters for its 20th anniversary, playing for one week only at Dolby Cinema at AMC locations.

AMC, Warner Bros. and Dolby Laboratories announced the Wachowski’s movie will be returning to theaters in the premium setting across 135 locations starting on August 30, continuing through September 5. Warner Bros’ president of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein said in a statement (via /Film):
“Warner Bros. is proud to re-release the groundbreaking motion picture The Matrix, for the first time in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Dolby Cinema offers moviegoers an unparalleled sense of realism in how they experience this game-changing film, making it a must-see event, whether for the first time or a return to The Matrix.”

Doug Darrow, senior vice president of Dolby Laboratories’ Cinema Business Group, also said in a statement (via EW):
“Bringing The Matrix to life in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos pays homage to the masterpiece that the Wachowskis created 20 years ago. Movie lovers will be able to see and experience unforgettable sequences like bullets flying in slow motion with the utmost detail – transforming one of the most iconic sci-fi films of this generation.”
Funny enough, director Quentin Tarantino was interviewed for a recently-released podcast series hosted by film critic Amy Nicholson, and at the top of one of the episodes he recalled seeing the movie on opening night. “I remember the place was jam-packed, and there was a real electricity in the air – it was really, really exciting. He continued, talking about how it was the TV spots, not the main trailer, that got people excited about the movie, even though no one had any idea what to expect. “We were excited about this movie, but we really didn’t know what we were going to see, we didn’t really know what to expect. We didn’t know the mythology at all – like at all; We had to discover that.”
The mystery of THE MATRIX may be gone after 20 years, but surely it has a special place in the hearts of many film fans around the world, and certainly getting to see it on the big screen again — or for the first time — will get some of that electricity Tarantino was talking about back in air.
THE MATRIX returns to select AMC theaters on August 30 – September 5, and you can check to see where it's playing near you here.
