It's happening! Yes, today we have word that Lana Wachowski is set to write and direct MATRIX 4 with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss returning as Neo and Trinity. Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich made the announcement saying:
We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana. Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.
Wachowski added:
Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.
On top of directing this fourth THE MATRIX movie, Lana Wachowski will also pen the sequel's screenplay along with Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell. Wachowski also produces along with Grant Hill. Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute.
The film will begin production at the beginning of 2020.
I can imagine quite a few people out there might not be too excited about the idea of another MATRIX movie. And I would have been one of them. Six months ago. But then a few months back I decided during a bout of insomnia to revisit the films, and I found the first two flicks, THE MATRIX and THE MATRIX RELOADED to be a lot of fun. The third movie THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS is still pretty damn bad – but at least it had kick-ass action!
For those of you that may have forgotten, the original film was written and directed by The Wachowskis and starred Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Laurence Fishburne. You can snag the first three films on Blu-ray HERE, HERE, and HERE.
