Family is the only thing that matters in the new trailer for The Many Saints of Newark. Directed by Alan Taylor, the Sopranos prequel revolves around a young Tony Soprano (played by the late James Gandolfini’s son, Michael Gandolfini), who is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city.
Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities—and whose influence over his impressionable nephew will help make the teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we’ll later come to know: Tony Soprano.
Today’s trailer gives us another look at the mean streets of Newark and the criminals that rule them with an iron fist and marinara sauce on their breath. As cinematic history has taught us, you can’t control a territory without some bloodshed, and The Many Saints of Newark looks to have its stomping ground running red with the stuff. It’s no wonder that Tony finds himself living a life of crime with so many upstanding role models around. Anything for family, though, right?
The Many Saints of Newark stars an ensemble cast including Michael Gandolfini, Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Billy Magnussen, Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Michela De Rossi, and Alexandra Intrator.
Created by David Chase, The Many Saints of Newark will be in theaters on October 1st and on HBO Max for 31 days following the film’s theatrical release.
