The Many Saints of Newark debuted in theaters and on HBO Max just days ago, but while the Sopranos prequel hasn’t exactly impressed at the box office, it has been viewed by an impressive number at home. According to Samba TV, The Many Saints of Newark has been viewed by 1 million U.S. households on HBO Max over the weekend.

At 1 million households, The Many Saints of Newark has risen above the weekend viewership totals of similar movies, including Reminiscence, Malignant, Cry Macho, In the Heights, and Judas and the Black Messiah. Mortal Kombat still stands as the most-watched theatrical day-and-date movie in its first weekend, with 3.8 million U.S. households tuning in. At the moment, The Sopranos prequel has grossed just $5 million domestically, with a total of $7.3 million worldwide. If you’ve already watched it, did you catch the film in theaters or watch it on HBO Max?

There have been rumblings that the film could spawn a sequel, and Michael Gandolfini is game to reprise his role of Tony Soprano if the opportunity arises.

This is such an incredible character and incredible group of actors and incredible filmmakers that I learned so much. This is going to jump to the priority to get to work with David or anyone again. But I am not so much interested in playing 30-year-old Tony. I think it there’s an interesting part after this movie, before the show, that we can explore something about Tony that hasn’t been explored, in his youth, in his 20s. After that, we’re getting a little too old. My dad really explored and David explored everything about that. So is there a time limit around other movies? No, not so much. But the older I get, there is a cutoff where it just naturally goes into the show.

The Sopranos creator David Chase, who also wrote the prequel, has previously said that he would also return if he could co-write the script with former Sopranos writer Terence Winter. In response, Winter said that he would do it “in a heartbeat. Absolutely. The Many Saints of Newark is now playing in theaters and on HBO Max, so be sure to check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray.
