The Last Voyage of the Demeter: Universal Dracula movie drifts to summer 2023 release date

Renfield, starring Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult, isn’t the only Dracula movie that Universal will be releasing in 2023. They’ll also be bringing us the completely unrelated Dracula project The Last Voyage of the Demeter next year – and while Demeter had previously been scheduled to reach theatres on January 27, 2023, beating Renfield to the screen by three months, Universal has decided to make it a summer release.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is now set to be released on August 11, 2023.

Escaping development hell twenty years after the script was first written, The Last Voyage of the Demeter was directed by André Øvredal (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark). Bragi F. Schut, Stefan Ruzowitzky, and Zak Olkewicz receive writing credits on the finished film, which is based on

a single chapter, the Captain’s Log, from Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 novel Dracula. The chapter tells the story of the Russian schooner, Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo – twenty four unmarked wooden crates – from Carpathia to London. The film will detail the strange events that befell the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a terrifying presence onboard the ship. When it finally arrived near Whitby Harbour, it was a derelict. There was no trace of the crew.

The Hollywood Reporter offers some cast and character details: “The Last Voyage of the Demeter stars Corey Hawkins as a doctor aboard the Demeter, Aisling Franciosi as an unwitting stowaway, Liam Cunningham as the ship’s captain, and David Dastmalchian as the Demeter’s first mate. The ensemble cast includes Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapicic, Nikolai Nikolaeff, and Javier Botet. “

Our own Chris Bumbray had the chance to see some footage from The Last Voyage of the Demeter at CinemaCon last month, and he said the movie looks epic, gory, and classy.
