If you’re a fan of Netflix’s The Last Kingdom then you’ll be pleased to know that a feature film of the Viking series is in the works. With the fifth and final season of the series set to debut next year, Deadline has reported that The Last Kingdom will be followed up by a movie titled Seven Kings Must Die.
Based on Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling books, The Last Kingdom follows warrior and hero Uhtred as he seeks to reclaim his birthright – his ancestral lands of Bebbanburg. Alexander Dreymon, who stars as Uhtred, will be featured in The Last Kingdom movie and will also executive produce the project. “It’s been such a privilege to tell Uhtred’s story for five seasons,” Dreymon said. “I’m so grateful to our fans. They have been immensely loyal to The Last Kingdom and thanks to their support, the team is getting together for another round.”
Production on Seven Kings Must Die will kick off early next year in Budapest under the direction of Ed Bazalgette from a script by Martha Hillier. Alexander Dreymon will be joined by many other members of The Last Kingdom cast with a few new additions as well, but I suppose we’ll have to see which characters make it out of the fifth season alive. The Last Kingdom producer Nigel Marchant said that while the fifth season of the show will “fully conclude the series, there was always one more story that we wanted to tell.“
The Last Kingdom isn’t the only Viking series on Netflix as they also have Vikings: Valhalla, a spin-off series from Vikings creator Michael Hirst. The series will be an explosive new chapter of the Vikings legend as it takes place “100 years after the original series concludes and dramatizes the adventures of the most famous Vikings who ever lived – Leif Erikson, Freydis, Harald Harada and the Norman King William the Conqueror (also a Viking descendant). These men and women will blaze new paths as they fight for survival in an ever-changing and evolving Europe.“
