The first teaser trailer and poster for The Last Duel has been released and it hints at a historical epic from writers Nicole Holofcener, Matt Damo, and Ben Affleck.
Based on the book "The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France" by Eric Jager, the film also stars Matt Damon in the lead role of Jean de Carrouges. In the film, set in 14th-century France, knight Jean de Carrougues and his squire Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) are ordered to fight to the death after Carrouges accuses Le Gris of raping his wife. In addition to co-writing the film, Ben Affleck also takes on a supporting role in the film as Count Pierre d'Alencon while the movie also stars Jodie Comer, Harriet Walter, Nathaniel Parker, Sam Hazeldine, and Michael McElhatton.
The Last Duel was originally set to begin a limited theatrical release on December 25, 2020, before going wide on January 8, 2021. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the release date was delayed to its current date of October 14, 2021. The Last Duel suffered many COVID delays during filming with Disney delaying the shoot indefinitely on March 13, 2020. Filming eventually resumed in late September 2020 and concluded in Ireland on October 14, 2020.
