Ever wondered how many people lose their lives in any particular horror movie? Well, we've got you covered with THE KILL COUNTER, our hit new series takes out all of the guesswork and counts out each and every death on (and sometimes off) screen. Break out your calculator and try to keep up!
On this episode, we take to the bathroom and dare to say his name 5 times with Bernard Rose's 1992 adaptation of HELLRAISER and NIGHTBREED author Clive Barker's CANDYMAN with Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd as the man in the killer coat. This movie makes 90's horror look good!
Here's the rundown if you somehow missed the burning boat.
Skeptical graduate student Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) befriends Anne-Marie McCoy (Vanessa Williams) while researching superstitions in a housing project on Chicago's Near North Side. From Anne-Marie, Helen learns about the Candyman (Tony Todd), a knife-wielding figure of urban legend that some of her neighbors believe to be responsible for a recent murder. After a mysterious man matching the Candyman's description begins stalking her, Helen comes to fear that the legend may be all too real.
The film sports a 74% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Though it ultimately sacrifices some mystery in the name of gory thrills, Candyman is a nuanced, effectively chilling tale that benefits from an interesting premise and some fine performances.
Agreed!
TriStar Pictures and PolyGram Filmed Entertainment unleashed CANDYMAN into a theater near you back on October 16, 1992. It grossed over $25M in the US and was followed by two ho-hum sequels, CANDYMAN: FAREWELL TO THE FLESH in 1995 and CANDYMAN: DAY OF THE DEAD in 1999. Producer Jordan Peele and director Nia DiCosta's "spiritual sequel" will (hopefully) hit sometime this year. WATCH CANDYMAN HERE!
