This is a big week for PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING, with a plot synopsis being revealed and a new trailer coming at New York Comic Con. Now we have a new present for you in the form of some sweet new images of the movie (courtesy of EW), which gives us a look at the new cast of characters, played by the likes of John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, and newcomer Cailee Spaeny. Oh, and what would PACIFIC RIM images be without a glimpse at the new and improved monster-bashing robots.
Take a look at the images below, and read what Boyega had to say about the new bots and his dynamic with Rinko Kikuchi’s returning Mako.
Jake is the prodigal son. He is a young guy who was on the cusp of greatness in his early days when he was training to be a Jaeger pilot, but he always had a troubled relationship with Stacker. I’m the son he didn’t really talk about in the first film … the product of Stacker’s first love. Because of Stacker’s attention and hope and faith in Mako rather than him.
Boyega will team-up with Eastwood (above) as they mind-meld into The Drift to control Gipsy Avenger (below), the upgraded version of Gipsy Danger from the first movie:
She is still a two-man Jaeger and has new weapons and technology. The new Gipsy has LCD screens and holographic imagery of what is going outside. Her gravity sling has improved. Pilots are no longer locked into robot by feet. It has a scanning system that makes the drift easier to handle. Gipsy Avenger is strongest and hardest to operate.
There’s also the new bots, such as the orange Saber Athena who can wield dual swords that can become one for optimal slicing and dicing; hulking Bracer Phoenix, a “mystery rogue Jaeger” big enough to require a three-man team, and has guns on its chest and; the red Guardian Bravo, a “stocky and strong” Jaeger that wields some killer electric whips.
Then there are the Kaiju beasts they will be facing, and though we have not seen them yet Boyega teases that the massive monsters we saw in the first film are nothing compared to what we’re going to see in UPRISING. Apparently, those were just the “test” monsters, and that these ones are “more intelligent,” and that the breach that was closed in the 2013 original was not their only way into our world.
We will see more of the action and characters in the new trailer that drops tomorrow, and hopefully, that action will include some of the beasts that weren’t shown in the above images. All in all, I’m down and ready for some robot-monster fighting, and this new batch of bots look terrific and formidable, and I’m sure is more than capable of ripping off a few Kaiju heads.
