The posters play on the idea of Thatcher if she were a political candidate today, referencing things such as the Occupy movement and the Tea Party. While that’s all very good and clever, the problem I have with these is that they’re suddenly now pandering to a group when, according to our own Chris Bumbray, the film itself is apparently too chicken shit to take any sort of stand for or against Thatcher the politician: “I suppose [director Phyllida Lloyd] can’t be blamed for playing it safe in regards to Thatcher’s life, as going either too positive or too negative would have invited a lot of criticism. However, the result is a “just-the-facts” style presentation that gets a little boring after awhile.”
THE IRON LADY, starring Meryl Streep and Jim Broadbent, opens tomorrow.
Synopsis: THE IRON LADY tells the compelling story of Margaret Thatcher, a woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world. The story concerns power and the price that is paid for power, and is a surprising and intimate portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman.
