Days after paparazzi pictures of Zac Efron on the set of The Iron Claw revealed the new bulked-up physique of the actor, a new still from the movie gives us a first look at Efron in action as Kevin Von Erich, also known as the Golden Warrior. The Iron Claw is a biopic about a family dynasty of wrestlers, the Von Erichs, which include Efron as Kevin, The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White as Kerry, and The King’s Man star Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich.
The pic, posted by Zac Efron himself on Instagram, shows the star with his long locks and new muscular build, delivering a flying kick to an opponent as he sports Von Erich’s signature barefoot wrestling attire. In addition, there is casting news with Deadline revealing that professional wrestler Maxwell Jacob Friedman is now joining the cast, which will help add more authenticity. Friedman is a wrestler for the All Elite Wrestling league where he is known by the moniker MJF.
Sean Durkin, director of Martha Marcy May Marlene, is helming this film, which he is directing from a script he wrote. The Cannes and Sundance prize winner’s film will be coming from the indie studio darling A24, as they will finance and produce the movie along with co-financiers Access Industries and BBC Films. Tessa Ross, Juliette Howell, and Angus Lamont will be producing the wrestling biopic from House Productions.
The cast not only features Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, and Harris Dickinson but will also include Holt McCallany, Maura Tierney, and Lily James. The new wrestling addition, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, previously wrestled for Major League Wrestling, Combat Zone Wrestling, and Five Borough Wrestling, having made his debut in the ring in 2015.
The Iron Claw is set for release from A24 on an unspecified date in 2023.
