Academy Awards, The Irishman, Avengers: Endgame, Oscars

As we near the end of the year, we find ourselves in the midst of awards season with 92nd Academy Awards just around the corner. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have been setting their shortlists for the contenders in each category, and today the Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee have selected the ten films of 2019 which remain in the running. All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films online or attend satellite bake-off screenings in January 2020.  Following the screenings, members of the VFX branch will vote to narrow it down to five films for final Oscar consideration.

Here are the ten films in the running for the Best Visual Effects category:

ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL

AVENGERS: ENDGAME

CAPTAIN MARVEL

CATS

GEMINI MAN

THE IRISHMAN

THE LION KING

1917

STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

TERMINATOR: DARK FATE

There you have it. Any noteworthy snubs? With only five films making it to the final round, half of these visually-spectacular movies will be left behind. Which of these movies do you think will make the final cut? The nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards will be announced on January 13, 2020, with the presentation ceremony set to air on February 9, 2020.
