With a budget reportedly close to $45 million, it’s easy to see why the current earnings of Sony’s THE INTERVIEW might raise more than a few eyebrows. The controversial movie was eventually put on streaming sites and VOD this past Christmas and since then has gone on to make an unprecedented $31 million in sales in just two weeks! Add on the $2.9 million from the box office and you’re smiling even more.
The Seth Rogen–James Franco film has been rented or purchased online and VOD more than 4.3 million times, more than any movie ever. I can’t imagine huge DVD/Blu-ray sales considering a lot of people own it now after their online purchase, but maybe there is another audience waiting for the home release to push it into the black. I watched the movie and thought it was on par with recent comedies Rogen and friends. I laughed and that's what's important. Check out Alex's positive review here!
Do you think the movie will become profitable? Do you foresee studios taking notice of these numbers for future releases?
