The Hunger Games scores PG13 rating for “intense violent thematic material” and a 60 second spot

First off here’s the new sixty second spot for THE HUNGER GAMES, one which chooses still to focus more on the character side of things and reveal a bit more about Katniss Everdeen’s life before she becomes a tribute.

Now: I agree that violence doesn’t always make everything better, nor is the quality of a good movie measured by the length of the intestines ripped out of the villain’s gut. But sometimes material calls for a harsher take on human interaction. Sometimes certain material benefits from not holding back in any aspect of the story, and not shying away from whatever it is that needs to be said or done.

While I haven’t read any of the books in this series I’m still interested enough in THE HUNGER GAMES to care about its movie treatment, which is why I’m happy to hear that the Gary Ross (SEABISCUIT) directed project has garnered a PG13 rating for “for intense violent thematic material and disturbing images – all involving teens.”  Not that there was a whole lot of doubt surrounding what the rating would be and why, but it’s always encouraging to see a director/studio willing to go the distance the source material commands such that the tragedy, danger, and sacrifice of its characters might be fully honored. 

The games commence March 23rd.
