This shouldn’t be much of a surprise, but the official word is that both STAR TREK 2 and THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE are getting the IMAX treatment, with STAR TREK 2 also being in IMAX 3D.
“We were so thrilled with the creative results of shooting IMAX for Mission: Impossible that we jumped at the chance to use the format for Star Trek. All expectations were exceeded — the action and resolution is insane at this scale. We cannot wait for audiences to see the crew of the Enterprise in a way they never have before,” said J.J. Abrams.
For THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE, it was announced that director Francis Lawrence (I AM LEGEND) will be shooting specific scenes with IMAX cameras with the rest of the film being digitally remastered in the format.
“We are thrilled to continue the productive partnership we enjoyed with Imax on the first installment of THE HUNGER GAMES,” Lionsgate motion picture group co-chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger said Wednesday.
I’ve heard arguments both for and against IMAX. Personally, I dig it. It’s not meant for every movie, but seeing PROMETHEUS and THE AVENGERS in IMAX was a pretty thrilling theater-going experience and I expect no less from THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. It’s not like we don’t have the choice to NOT see it in IMAX…
STAR TREK 2 opens in both tradtiional and IMAX® 3D format on May 17, 2013 and THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE opens in both traditional and IMAX on November 22, 2013.
