I’m going to get the second part of this news out of the way first, because it’s really just going to be hanging over whatever else I type up until you know just what I am talking about: late night talkshow host Stephen Colbert is 1) hilarious and 2) a big (big [big]) LORD OF THE RINGS fan. There’s no confirmation on the size of the role, the nature of the role itself, or even of which film he’ll show up in, though the report seems to say that it should come in one of the latter two films and not in the soon-to-be-released THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY.
If you still carry some disbelief in your heart, here’s the source interview for all of this morning HOBBIT/Colbert madness – when speaking with Playboy recently, Colbert said the following: “Peter Jackson invited me to the set last year,” he said. “I flew out and watched them shoot some scenes and went to some locations. I saw a 25-minute cut, and it was amazing. Jackson knows I’m a big fan of the films.” And when pressed further regarding whether he was hired as an extra, Colbert just smiled. When a followup question asked “Are you telling us you’re in the Hobbit movie?” he smiled again and said “Could be.”
So there you go. Nothing concrete in and of itself, no press release or the like, but all evidence points to the idea that the gleeful fanboy that lives in the heart of Stephen Colbert couldn’t help but rear up in response to the questions. What would you most like to see Colbert a part of in THE HOBBIT films?
Now back to Bolg. Bolg the Orc. Bolg the scarred and terrifying and badass looking Orc. In a role/look that causes me to recall Lurtz from THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, Bolg (played by Conan Stevens) is an Orc chieftain who comes to power after his father Azog is killed in war with the Dwarves. Bolg rules for 150 years or so, eventually leading an army of Orcs to participate in the bloody Battle of Five Armies. He looks mean, he looks vicious, and like Lurtz he’ll serve as a secondary antagonist for our heroes as they make their long trek to reclaim their lost treasure from the terrible wyrm Smaug (played by Benedict Cumberbatch).
