Just over five years ago, comedian/television host Chris Hardwick started a podcast called Nerdist, and upon the foundation of that podcast he has quickly built a “nerd media” empire. The latest development with Nerdist Industries is that the company is getting into film distribution, and the first movie chosen to be released under their Nerdist Presents banner is a sci-fi horror offering called THE HIVE, which James Gunn has referred to as “the most horrifying love story ever.”
The feature directorial debut of Dave Yarovesky, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Will Honley, THE HIVE
tells the story of Adam, a teenage camp counselor who wakes inside a boarded up cabin, with absolutely no memory of who he is or where he is. The only clues as to who he is and what’s happening are messages Adam has scrawled for himself onto the walls and disturbing changes to his physiology. As he begins to piece together the events that led him to his strange imprisonment, he realizes that the only memories he does have are not his own, and they may be the key to his survival.
Gabriel Basso plays Adam, and the supporting cast includes Kathryn Prescott, Jacob Zachar, and Gabrielle Walsh. The film was produced by Cary Granat, Ed Jones, Vincent Seiber, and Jared Mass.
Hardwick had this to say:
“This movie is so much damn fun. The first time I saw it, I was blown away by how fresh and inventive the story was, which is no small feat in horror. I knew right away I wanted to help get this movie into the eyes and earholes of horror fans.”
Nerdist plans to get the movie into theatres and on VOD this fall, and will be promoting it at next month’s San Diego Comic-Con.
I’m a fan of Hardwick, find the plot of THE HIVE to be intriguing, and I’m a sucker for summer camp settings, so this news appeals to me across the board. I can’t wait to see how it all turns out.
