We have heard about Ryan Gosling‘s directorial debut for some time now, mostly via the mixed reviews it received at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. Warner Bros seemed to have some faith in the movie and will release it day and date in limited theaters and on demand. Now, we have a look at the first full trailer for the fantasy drama.
Starring AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Ian De Casestecker, Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, DOCTOR WHO’s Matt Smith, and Eva Mendes, LOST RIVER looks like it has a lot of influence from Gosling’s two time director Nicolas Winding Refn. The movie looks very fantastical and not mainstream in the least from this trailer which could explain the mixed reception it received.
“Lost River” is a dark fairy tale about love, family and the fight for survival in the face of danger. In the virtually abandoned city of Lost River, Billy (Christina Hendricks), a single mother of two, is led into a macabre underworld in her quest to save her childhood home and hold her family together. Her teenage son Bones (Iain De Casestecker) discovers a mystery about the origins of Lost River that triggers his curiosity and sets into motion an unexpected journey that will test his limits and the limits of those he loves.
I think the critics could be right on and this may just be a well edited trailer but I am intrigued by LOST RIVER. Anyone who is familiar with Ryan Gosling‘s musical projects knows the guy is not exactly the mainstream guy you envision from red carpets and tabloid magazines. The guy has a darker side that conflicts with his perception as a hunk. This movie may be derivative and cliche, but it looks interesting enough for me to give it a shot.
LOST RIVER hits VOD and limited release on April 10th.
