The Handover: Timo Tjahjanto & Scott Derrickson’s violent Christmas story

A couple weeks ago, genre filmmakers Timo Tjahjanto (May the Devil Take You) and Scott Derrickson (Sinister) took to social media to reveal that they have – along with Derrickson's writing partner C. Robert Cargill – teamed up to write a mysterious project together. The first draft of the script was completed on July 22nd, and while we previously knew that the title was The followed by an eight letter word that started with H and ended with R, Tjahjanto has now decided to share some more information. The full title is The Handover, and it's "a Christmas story".

Tjahjanto has also described The Handover as "ultra violent, ultra absurd, ultra over the top & ultra heartwarming". Details on the plot are being kept secret, but the cover of the script revealed the following (with the last two numbers of the year obscured):

The year is 20–.

Society is screwed. Crime and violence have risen steadily in all remaining regions of planet Earth.

Most of Asia has been unified.

Tjahjanto was recently hired to direct an English-language remake of Train to Busan and Derrickson is working on the Joe Hill adaptation The Black Phone, so it's not clear where The Handover fits into their schedules. We'll keep you updated on this project as we learn more.

An ultra violent Christmas movie from Tjahjanto and Derrickson sounds like something I really need to see.

In addition to May the Devil Take You, Tjahjanto's credits include directing segments of the anthology films The ABCs of Death and V/H/S/2, as well as the feature films May the Devil Take You Too, The Night Comes for Us, and Headshot, among others. Derrickson and Cargill wrote Derrickson's films Sinister, Doctor Strange, and The Black Phone together, and also wrote Sinister 2 for Ciaran Foy to direct.
