The Grudge 2020 debuts with 21% on Rotten Tomatoes

Writer-director Nicolas Pesce's (THE EYES OF MY MOTHER, PIERCING) reimagining of THE GRUDGE with Lin Shaye, John Cho, Demian Bichir, and Andrea Riseborough is now playing. And today we learned that, while the movie doesn't currently have a Critics Consensus over on Rotten Tomatoes, it has (so far) managed to snag a mere 21% approval rating. Ouch. What did YOU think? Let us know below!

This new version earned an R rating from the MPAA for "disturbing violence and bloody images, terror and some language" and takes place in America and – get this – happens at the same time as the 2004 Sarah Michelle Gellar flick. It follows:

A single mother and young detective discovers that a suburban house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death. Now, she runs to save herself and her son from demonic spirits from the cursed house in her neighborhood.

And if this one is (financially) successful, Pesce has ideas for several more sequels:

If we were to make more, I would want to do ones that were in Africa and in Europe and in Australia.  It’s about showing you that this thing is sprawled much further than we thought, and it’s way bigger and way more scary that way, I think.

Directed by Nicolas Pesce from a screenplay he wrote himself based on a story by Jeff Buhler based on Ju-on: The Grudge by Takashi Shimizu, THE GRUDGE is produced by Sam Raimi along with Robert Tapert and Takashige Ichise. It stars Andrea Riseborough along with Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye, Jacki Weaver, Frankie Faison, and William Sadler. THE GRUDGE is NOW PLAYING in theaters.
